About flooring tools
Cheap tools cost you twice. A £20 laminate kit will lay one room adequately and then break; a proper £80 install kit lays every floor you'll ever fit and pays for itself on install two. If you're DIY-fitting a floor, invest in the right tools once and enjoy the result for 20 years.
Pros
- +Professional finish on a DIY install
- +Reduces waste dramatically — accurate cuts, less snapped planks
- +Faster fitting — a full room in a day instead of a weekend
Trade-offs
- −Budget kits fail mid-install
- −Some specialist tools (knee kicker, carpet stretcher) can be hired instead of bought
FAQs
Do I really need a tapping block?
Yes. Hitting a plank edge directly with a hammer crushes the click joint and creates a permanent gap. A tapping block spreads the force safely.
What's the difference between a utility knife blade for LVT?
Hooked blades score LVT for a score-and-snap cut without dust. Straight blades work but need more passes. Change blades every 10 cuts — dull blades tear the vinyl.
